All Transitional Deacons preparing for ordination in May are required to “celebrate” a “Practice Mass” which is observed and evaluated by seminary professors. Deacon Bobby held his “Practice Mass” on Wednesday, March 8th at 7 pm. at Immaculate Conception. Everything was prepared and Bobby, the choir and those chosen for special roles were ready, HOWEVER, Mother Nature was not cooperative. We experienced an entire day of extremely high winds which took out the power for an hour around noon and then again around 4 pm. The second time, power was out until sometime after 7:30 pm. We celebrated the 5:30 Mass in church in candlelight, but it would have been impossible for Bobby to hold his Practice Mass there so Waldeisen Hall was transformed into a makeshift church! To make that happen, our parishioners sprang into action carrying hymnals, music books and stands, guitars, liturgical vessels, candle sticks and everything else needed to “celebrate Mass” from the church to the hall which had power because it’s on a separate grid. They then took everything back over to the church when all was finished. I.C. Spirit at it’s best!
Bobby realized something the next day: He had planned to hold this event at the church where he is assigned as a Transitional Deacon, but circumstances changed and the event was moved here. He had so wanted his First Mass in May to be the first time he stood at the altar at I.C., his home parish, and because of the power outage, it will be!!!
THANK YOU to all who came to support Bobby and to all who jumped into action so this did not have to be rescheduled. Please continue to keep Bobby and his classmates in your prayers and pray, as well, for an increase in vocations.
