On August 15th the Church celebrates the Solemnity of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary. Pope Pius XII declared the Assumption a doctrine of the faith on November 1, 1950 and it is a Holy Day of Obligation. The dogma states that Mary was taken up body and soul into heaven after completing her earthly life (her dormition or falling asleep in the Lord) rather than suffer the consequences of original sin – death. Although not officially promulgated until 1950, the feast was celebrated by Christians as early as the 7th century.
